Ekurhuleni police investigate ninth woman's death in series of killings

South African authorities are investigating a series of violent killings following the discovery of a ninth woman's body in the Ekurhuleni municipality, east of Johannesburg. The latest victim, believed to be in her 30s, was found near a construction site in Dawn Park on Thursday, wrapped in a sheet and bearing apparent stab wounds.

Since mid-July, nine women have been found dead across various locations, including Kempton Park, Clayville, and KwaThema. Many of the victims were found partially or fully naked, and some exhibited similar bruising, fueling public concern that a serial killer or a criminal group may be responsible. While police have noted these “concerning similarities,” they have not officially confirmed a serial killer is involved.

In response, President Cyril Ramaphosa has ordered that the investigation be given absolute priority. A multidisciplinary task team, including detectives, intelligence officers, and forensic specialists, has been deployed. Police have also implemented a lockdown in Kempton Park and increased patrols through Operation Shanela. A reward of 400,000 rands has been offered for information leading to arrests.
