South Africa prepares for major heavy truck and EV trials
South Africa's transport and logistics sector is preparing for two major large-scale vehicle evaluations. The Truck Test 2026, scheduled for November 10–12, will feature 20 extra-heavy trucks from 13 different manufacturers. This comparative test follows a demanding route between Johannesburg and Durban, occurring amid record-high diesel prices that have significantly impacted the supply chain backbone.
Simultaneously, a coalition including flx EV, GoMetro, and the Kuehne Climate Center has launched the Mzansi EV Truck Super Test 2026. This trial involves a 4,000km journey using two production electric trucks from SANY Africa and GHM Machinery. The route connects Johannesburg to Cape Town, Gqeberha, East London, and Durban to test battery-electric performance, energy requirements, and the adequacy of existing highway charging infrastructure for commercial freight under South African operating conditions.
