South Africa President receives report on Iranian naval drill participation

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has received a finalized report investigating why Iranian warships participated in the ‘Exercise Will of Peace 2026’ naval drills despite his explicit instructions to exclude them.

The multinational exercise, led by China and held in South African waters, included forces from BRICS Plus nations such as Russia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. The investigation was launched in February 2026 to determine if high-ranking members of the South African armed forces or Defense Ministry officials failed to heed the presidential order.

The probe was conducted by a panel led by Justice Ngoepe. Due to national security considerations, the report will remain confidential while the President reviews its findings and recommendations. The incident previously drew criticism from the United States, as the drills occurred amid heightened geopolitical tensions involving Iran.
