South Africa proposes relocating refugee processing to Beitbridge border

South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs has published proposals to restructure the country’s asylum and migration management system. Under the new plan, the Beitbridge Port of Entry would become the mandatory application point for asylum seekers entering through northern land borders.

The proposal includes the disestablishment of the Tshwane Refugee Reception Office in Marabastad, Pretoria, which has served as a primary inland hub for decades. Officials stated that moving processing to the border aims to reduce administrative bottlenecks in urban centers, prevent irregular migration into metropolitan areas, and improve security screening.

The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration (IMC) welcomed the move, noting it is part of a broader effort to modernize migration management and strengthen border control. The reforms also align with a digital transformation strategy involving biometric verification and automated identity checks to streamline processing and reduce fraudulent claims.
