South Africa protests erupt over rising femicide and safety concerns

Protests and public outcry have intensified in South Africa following the discovery of multiple women's bodies in Ekurhuleni and Kraaifontein. Activists and citizens are criticizing the police for suggesting that women take extra precautions to ensure their safety, arguing that the burden of prevention should lie with the state and law enforcement rather than the victims.

In Cape Town, approximately 100 people staged a silent protest at City Hall to demand justice and better protection against gender-based violence (GBV). Demonstrators highlighted the recent murders of eight women in the Kempton Park area and the discovery of a ten-year-old girl's body in Kraaifontein.

In response to the crisis, the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) has pledged to support women by training drivers and marshals to recognize and respond to GBV incidents. Meanwhile, organizations like Women for Change and UN Women South Africa have called for greater institutional accountability, stating that women should not have to alter their daily lives due to fear of violence.
