South Africa rail recovery requires technical and infrastructure upgrades

South Africa’s rail recovery and freight reliability depend on significant technical upgrades and infrastructure improvements. Brian Monakali, Chairman of the South African Heavy Haul Association (SAHHA) and CEO of the Railway Safety Regulator, stated that opening the network to third-party operators requires more than just policy reform; it necessitates modern signaling, better infrastructure monitoring, and coordinated planning between mines, railways, and ports.

Key challenges to network efficiency include derailments, infrastructure theft, and vandalism. To mitigate these, Monakali suggests implementing condition assessment systems, such as trackside instruments and temperature sensors, to provide real-time warnings. He also highlighted the potential for digital analytics, artificial intelligence, and predictive maintenance to target repairs before breakdowns occur.

Additionally, the current signaling system is outdated. An assessment of digital signaling options is currently being conducted by Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager and the Railway Safety Regulator. A decision on the preferred model, which may include European, American, or Chinese systems, is expected by the end of March 2027.
