South Africa faces rising tensions over September 30 anti-immigration deadline

Tensions are rising in South Africa as the anti-immigration movement March and March has set a September 30 deadline for undocumented foreign nationals to leave the country. The group, led by Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, has called on Southern African Development Community (SADC) governments to take responsibility for repatriating their citizens.

Bishop Raphael Bahebwa, a refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, has gone into hiding following death threats for advocating for the rights of foreign nationals. In Durban, hundreds of refugees and asylum seekers have been living on the streets outside the Durban Refugee Reception Centre due to fears of xenophobic violence.

The immigration debate has become a central issue ahead of the local government elections scheduled for November 4. Protesters argue that undocumented migration exacerbates national challenges such as unemployment, crime, and housing shortages, while human rights activists warn that recurring xenophobic attacks violate the rights of migrants.
