South Africa has recorded a decline in several major crime categories during the first quarter of the 2026/2027 financial year. According to crime statistics released in Pretoria, murder cases decreased by 5.9%, falling from 5,770 to 5,427.

Contact crime saw a 2.3% reduction, while specific categories showed more significant declines: trio crimes fell by 16.4%, carjackings by 18.2%, and truck hijackings by 21%. Robbery at residential premises also declined by 17.6%. Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia attributed these improvements to intelligence-led policing and improved cooperation between law enforcement agencies.

Despite these gains, officials expressed concern over persistent threats. Acting National Police Commissioner Leuitenant General Puleng Dimpane noted that while progress is being made, the pace must increase. Minister Cachalia highlighted that violence against women, children, and vulnerable groups remains a major issue. He also warned of the impact of organized crime—including gang violence, illegal mining, and construction mafias—and identified alcohol as a primary driver of violent crime and serious assaults.
