South Africa road transport shifts toward efficiency and electrification
South Africa’s road transport sector is undergoing a transition driven by rising operating costs, fuel price volatility, and technological advancements. High diesel and petrol prices have increased pressure on the logistics industry, prompting transporters to prioritize vehicle productivity, maintenance, and reliability to maximize payloads and minimize downtime.
Industry leaders and researchers indicate that the move toward electrification and improved fuel efficiency is gaining momentum. The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) notes that record fuel prices are strengthening the case for electric transport and cleaner vehicle technologies.
Regulatory changes are expected to support this shift. The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources’ Clean Fuels Two (CF2) regulations, slated for implementation in July 2027, will upgrade national fuel quality by significantly reducing sulphur content in petrol and diesel. This transition is expected to improve air quality and pave the way for stricter vehicle emission and efficiency standards in line with national Green Transport Strategy goals.
