South Africa safety warnings issued for summer heat and water risks

As summer approaches in South Africa, health and safety organizations are issuing guidance to manage rising temperatures and increased water activity during the school holiday period.

The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) recommends using sunscreen with at least SPF 30, wearing protective clothing, and seeking shade to mitigate high UV radiation. To prevent dehydration, the South African Department of Health advises increasing fluid intake and limiting alcohol consumption. During heatwaves, individuals are encouraged to limit strenuous outdoor activities and keep indoor spaces cool.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has noted a rise in coastal rescue operations and urges the public to exercise caution around beaches, rivers, and dams. Safety recommendations include swimming between designated flags where lifeguards are present, wearing lifejackets when boating, and maintaining constant supervision of children. The NSRI also advises swimmers caught in rip currents to swim parallel to the shore and warns against alcohol consumption while near water.
