South Africa shark attack kills swimmer at Orient Beach

A 65-year-old swimmer, Janine Lochrenberg, died following a shark attack at Orient Beach in KuGompo City, South Africa. Lochrenberg was swimming in open water with a group when the incident occurred. Witnesses reported that she sustained severe bites to her arm and thigh. Despite attempts by fellow swimmers and medical personnel to provide aid and control bleeding, she was declared dead at the scene.

Experts from the East London Museum, including chief scientist Kevin Cole, noted that the injuries were consistent with a great white shark attack. Researchers estimated the animal involved may have exceeded 3.5 meters in length. This incident marks the city’s first fatal shark attack since 1997. In response, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality has closed Orient Beach and nearby Eastern Beach until further notice.

At the time of the attack, Lochrenberg was wearing a Sharkbanz 2, a magnetic shark-repellent device attached to her ankle. The incident has renewed scrutiny regarding the efficacy of such deterrents. Previous scientific studies, including research from Flinders University, have suggested that magnetic bracelets may not provide significant protection against sharks compared to certain electric deterrents.
