South Africa survey reveals gap in iGaming player protection
A survey of 1,000 South African adults commissioned by SOFTSWISS has identified a gap in player protection within the iGaming sector. The findings indicate a disconnect between financial vulnerability and the use of responsible gambling tools. Specifically, unemployed respondents—who are most likely to use financial windfalls to settle debt—show a lower demand for spending-limit tools compared to the general population.
While 43.2% of all respondents requested spending-limit tools, only 35.3% of unemployed respondents did so. Additionally, current bettors expressed a higher desire for stronger protections against underage gambling (65.7%) than those who have never used online betting services (54.5%).
Industry experts suggest that because those with the greatest need for financial controls are the least likely to request them, a proactive approach to player protection is necessary. This follows Africa Safer Gambling Week, a coordinated campaign organized by the African iGaming Alliance.
