South Africa targets local manufacturing growth amid EV expansion

During South African Auto Week in Durban, industry leaders and government officials highlighted the country's evolving automotive landscape, specifically regarding the transition to electric vehicles (EVs).

The third annual New Energy Vehicle Road Trip concluded with twelve battery electric vehicle models arriving at Moses Mabhida Stadium. The participating vehicles included models from European, Japanese, and Chinese manufacturers, such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota, BYD, and Geely. Organizers noted that the variety of available EV models and improvements in public charging infrastructure have increased since the previous year.

Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau emphasized that the government seeks more than just vehicle assembly from carmakers. He stated that the review of the Automotive Production and Development Programme 2 aims to strengthen local component manufacturing. The South African Automotive Masterplan targets 60% local content by 2035, with a focus on creating opportunities for black- and women-owned businesses in sectors such as battery production, electric drive units, and charging equipment.
