South Africa tourism arrivals rise 12.3% in first half of 2026

South Africa’s tourism sector is experiencing significant growth, with international arrivals increasing by 12.3% in the first half of 2026. According to Statistics South Africa and the Department of Tourism, more than 5.58 million international visitors entered the country between January and June 2026.

Data indicates that growth is being driven heavily by regional markets. Arrivals from the rest of Africa rose by 14.3% during the first six months of the year, outpacing the 5.6% growth seen in overseas markets. By July 2026, the running total of international tourists reached approximately 6.58 million, a 12.4% increase compared to the previous year.

Industry data from The Capital Hotels, Apartments and Resorts highlights this regional trend, noting increased demand from travelers in Zambia, Kenya, Botswana, and Eswatini. Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille has characterized this shift toward African markets as a strategic development for the country’s hospitality and economic landscape.
