South Africa tourism arrivals rise despite declines from China and India

South Africa recorded 991,696 overnight international tourist arrivals in July, marking a 12.5% increase compared to the previous year. However, this growth was primarily driven by visitors from neighboring African countries, specifically within the Southern African Development Community (SADC), which accounted for approximately 79% of total overnight visitors.

In contrast, arrivals from key strategic Asian markets saw significant declines. Visitors from India fell by approximately 27%, while arrivals from China dropped by 20%. This downward trend in Asia has been persistent, with Indian arrivals down over 30% and Chinese arrivals down nearly 24% during the first seven months of the year.

Analysts suggest the decline in high-spending Asian tourists may be linked to economic headwinds in those nations and bureaucratic hurdles within the South African visa application process. While Europe remains the largest overseas source region, the slump in China and India poses a challenge to government efforts to diversify the tourism economy away from traditional Western markets.
