South Africa tourism arrivals rise 12.5% in July 2026
South Africa’s tourism sector reported significant growth in July 2026, with 991,696 international overnight tourists arriving, a 12.5% increase compared to July 2025. Between January and July 2026, total international arrivals reached 6,576,169, representing a 12.4% year-on-year increase. Growth was driven largely by African arrivals, which rose by 14.3%, while overseas arrivals grew by 5.7%.
Despite the overall boom, there has been a notable decline in visitors from specific Asian and Indian markets. Arrivals from India dropped by 26.9% year-on-year, and Chinese arrivals fell by 20.0%. Experts attribute these slumps to persistent bureaucratic hurdles and complicated visa application processes, despite the implementation of an electronic travel authorization system.
Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille noted that the growth is becoming geographically diversified, a key strategic priority. The sector remains a vital economic driver, having sustained 954,000 direct jobs and contributing 4.9% to the national GDP in 2024.
