South Africa travel: Tips for passport renewal and domestic tourism
South Africans are encouraged to plan ahead for both travel documentation and domestic holidays to manage costs and logistics effectively.
Regarding documentation, the Department of Home Affairs has expanded digital services and improved processing times. The current service targets are 13 working days for adults and 18 working days for children. Fees for a standard 32-page adult passport are R600, while a 48-page maxi passport costs R1,200. Applicants must provide valid identity documents, biometric details, and, in the case of children, birth certificates and parental consent.
In the tourism sector, South African Tourism reports that only 11% of citizens properly plan their holidays. Experts suggest that travelers can find better value by traveling off-season, setting strict budgets, and exploring lesser-known attractions. Initiatives like Travel Week offer discounts of up to 50%, provided travelers book in advance.
