South African Airways seeks recovery of US$55m Zimbabwe debt
South African Airways (SAA) faces uncertainty regarding the recovery of approximately R900 million (US$55 million) in ticket sale revenue owed by Zimbabwe. The Standing Committee on Appropriations recently criticized the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, stating it lacks the capability to secure the funds. Committee Chairperson Mmusi Maimane noted that the outstanding debt is hindering the airline’s profitability.
This issue is part of a broader challenge for airlines facing blocked funds due to foreign exchange controls and currency shortages. IATA data indicates that as of July 2026, US$624 million in funds are withheld from airlines globally, with 76% located in African countries. While nations like Nigeria and Angola have made progress in resolving such crises, experts suggest SAA’s recovery may be unlikely. Aviation consultant Sean Mendis noted that the debt originated from ticket sales in local currency during Zimbabwe’s hyperinflation years, which effectively reduced the value of the funds to nearly zero.
