South African Airways wins industry award amid regional diplomatic tensions
South African Airways (SAA) has received the Top African Airline Award at the 22nd Akwaaba African Travel Market held in Lagos, Nigeria. The award recognizes the airline for its consistency in customer service and premium product offerings.
Despite this industry recognition, SAA faces challenges regarding passenger traffic due to diplomatic tensions between South Africa and Nigeria. Concerns over xenophobia and the treatment of foreign nationals have led the Nigerian Parliament to suspend official visits to South Africa and direct lawmakers to boycott legislative activities hosted by South African institutions. Nigerian officials reported that 98 Nigerians have died in hate-related incidents in South Africa since 2022.
In response to these tensions, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned violence and vigilantism. While diplomatic relations remain strained, SAA continues to maintain a significant presence in the region, holding a 41 percent market share in regional African routes and a 24 percent share of the domestic market.
