South Africa refugee program: U.S. to admit 17,500 Afrikaners

The Trump administration has notified Congress of its intention to admit up to 17,500 South African refugees, primarily Afrikaners, during the 2027 fiscal year. This plan, estimated to cost approximately $500 million, represents a significant increase from the previously set cap of 7,500 refugees for all nationalities. Data from the State Department indicates that since the current administration took office, nearly 13,000 refugees have entered the U.S., with almost all being South African.

South African Ambassador to the U.S., Roelf Meyer, has formally rejected claims of a “white genocide” against Afrikaners, describing such narratives as false and a misrepresentation of the country's crime situation. Meyer, an Afrikaner himself and a former mediator in the end of apartheid, stated that the notion of a mass attack on the minority does not exist.

Diplomatic relations between the two nations remain strained. In addition to the refugee program, the U.S. has implemented visa restrictions on certain South Africans deemed responsible for race-based discrimination. While Meyer noted that relations are showing signs of improvement through ongoing dialogue, the specialized refugee pathway and visa policies continue to be points of significant political and diplomatic contention.
