South African awareness events target prostate cancer

Events in South Africa are drawing significant attention to prostate cancer awareness. In Johannesburg, hundreds of participants joined the Hollard Daredevil Race, wearing purple swim briefs to highlight the disease. Organizers noted that prostate cancer is the most common cancer among South African men, yet awareness remains low; studies in the Free State and Limpopo provinces indicate many men are unaware of the disease or screening methods before diagnosis.

Additionally, the Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer has seen a record number of male entries following the selection of the Prostate Foundation of South Africa as a 2026 beneficiary. Funds raised from the walk are intended to purchase essential diagnostic equipment for Frere Hospital, Provincial Hospital in Nelson Mandela Bay, and George Hospital, as well as a vehicle to assist CHOC staff in reaching rural patients in the Eastern Cape.

Medical experts emphasize that while survival rates are high when caught early, the risk increases significantly if the disease reaches an advanced stage. Specialists recommend regular testing for men over 50 or those in high-risk groups.
