South African institutions review digital transformation and crypto regulations

South African authorities are reassessing regulatory frameworks for digital assets and business intelligence. The National Treasury and the South African Reserve Bank have decided to rewrite draft rules concerning the cross-border movement of crypto assets following significant public feedback.

Dr. John Endres, CEO of the Institute of Race Relations (IRR), has urged the government to embrace the global shift toward digitized and tokenized payment systems. The IRR argued that existing draft regulations on capital flow management were unconstitutional and economically unwise, recommending instead the repeal of exchange controls to attract investment.

In the broader corporate sector, experts suggest that South African businesses must transition into 'intelligent enterprises.' While digitization and cloud migration have increased data availability, the focus is shifting toward integrating AI, data, and automation to move beyond simple reporting toward actionable intelligence and automated decision-making.
