South African military honors women and reviews long-term defense strategy

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is conducting activities to honor female service members and advance long-term military revitalization strategies. Defence and Military Veterans Minister Angie Motshekga is set to preside over a Women’s Day Parade at the Air Force Base Mobile Deployment Wing in Swartkop. The parade, held under the theme “Balance the Scales: Rights. Justice. Action. – GIVE TO GAIN,” serves to recognize women dedicated to national defense.

Concurrently, the Joint Standing Committee on Defence held a closed meeting at the Youngsfield military base to discuss the “Journey to Greatness” (JTG). This proposed 30-year strategy aims to revitalize South Africa’s military capabilities. The plan involves increasing the defence budget from its current level of less than one percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to at least 2.4 percent of GDP. Following the committee's input, the strategy is expected to move to the National Assembly for debate, though military observers note that previous defense reviews have struggled to meet established milestones.
