South African police arrest 121 suspects after deadly tavern shooting
South African authorities have launched a major security crackdown following a mass shooting at a tavern in Wedela, near Carletonville, which left 17 people dead and 15 others wounded. Eight masked individuals reportedly used AK-47 assault rifles and pistols to attack patrons during the incident.
In response, the South African Police Service (SAPS) conducted a joint operation titled ‘Operation Prosper’ alongside the South African National Defence Force. The sweep resulted in the arrest of 121 suspects allegedly linked to illegal mining syndicates. Authorities seized five firearms, including an AK-47, as well as gold-bearing material and specialized extraction equipment.
Police are investigating whether the shooting was a targeted retaliatory attack stemming from territorial disputes between illegal mining syndicates, known locally as ‘zama zamas’. While robbery is also being considered, Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni noted that mining-related turf wars are a strong possibility.
ActionSA president Herman Mashaba criticized the government’s handling of the crisis, blaming a failure to act decisively against illegal immigrants involved in illicit mining activities on the West Rand. He argued that local concerns regarding the impact of illegal mining on neighborhoods have been repeatedly ignored.
