South African police assist arrested woman giving birth at station

A woman gave birth to a healthy baby girl at the Assen police station in South Africa’s North West province after being taken into custody. The incident occurred on Thursday, October 8, following the arrest of the woman at the Msholozi informal settlement in Kameeldrift.

While at the station for processing, the woman began experiencing intense labour pains. Officers summoned an ambulance, but as the situation progressed, constables assisted with the delivery. An 80-year-old local resident, Marijke Van der Walt, was present and helped supervise the emergency birth.

The baby girl was delivered at approximately 4:15 pm. Shortly after, an ambulance arrived and transported both the mother and the newborn to a medical facility for further assessment and care. North West Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams commended the officers for their professionalism and compassionate response during the unexpected event.
