South Africa drug labs: Police dismantle multi-million-rand manufacturing facilities
South African law enforcement agencies, including the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Hawks, have uncovered two major drug manufacturing laboratories in a single week. The first raid occurred near Hartbeespoort Dam in the North West province, where police discovered a suspected Mandrax production facility. Four suspects, including a 39-year-old Zimbabwean national and three women, were arrested. Officers seized manufacturing equipment and four firearms.
A second large-scale operation took place on a farm near Krugersdorp, Gauteng, where a joint task force uncovered a suspected multi-million-rand laboratory. This facility contained quantities of Mandrax and ecstasy tablets, along with press machines valued at approximately R100 million. Five South African nationals were arrested during this raid.
Analysts from the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime (GI-TOC) suggest these discoveries indicate South Africa is evolving from a transit point into a production hub for international markets. Experts warn that sophisticated criminal syndicates may be using the country to manufacture high-quality methamphetamine and other synthetic drugs for export to regions such as Australia and New Zealand.
