South African Police Service conducts major arrests and recruitment drive

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has conducted a week-long high-density operation in Limpopo, resulting in the arrest of 2,084 suspects between 19 and 25 October 2026. The crackdown targeted violent crime, drug-related offenses, and illegal firearm possession. Notable arrests include 38 suspects linked to rape and 10 charged with robbery with aggravating circumstances. Authorities also seized eight firearms, 62 rounds of ammunition, and six stolen or robbed vehicles.

In a separate development, SAPS has seen a massive response to its recruitment drive for 5,500 police trainee posts. The online portal recorded over 156,000 registrations within the first 24 hours of opening. Data indicates that female applicants have outpaced males, with over 95,000 female applications compared to 76,000 from males. Gauteng province recorded the highest volume of submissions, followed by KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. SAPS has warned that the high volume of traffic may cause delays on the eRecruitment portal.
