South African Police Service warns against AI misuse of insignia
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued a warning regarding the unauthorized use of its badge, emblem, and uniform in artificial intelligence-generated content. The agency noted an increase in AI-generated images, posters, and videos circulating on social media that feature official police insignia.
SAPS stated that the unauthorized use of these symbols contravenes Section 66 of the SAPS Act 68 of 1995, as the official insignia is legally protected and cannot be copied, altered, or used without permission. The police service expressed concern that such content, whether created for entertainment, financial gain, or social media engagement, could be mistaken for genuine police communications, potentially misleading the public regarding official announcements, operations, or arrests.
The warning extends beyond impersonation to include the unauthorized wearing of uniforms and the use of AI to alter faces to appear as police officers. SAPS is urging the public to use AI tools responsibly and exercise caution when sharing digital content that depicts police branding.
