South African ports report improved efficiency and vessel movements

South African maritime operations are showing significant shifts in efficiency and vessel movement. In Cape Town, vessel waiting times have decreased by 61%, dropping from 115 hours to 44.3 hours. This improvement is supported by an 82% increase in rail performance and a 16% rise in container volumes. These operational gains, including improved truck turnaround times and new gantry cranes, are critical as the port handles approximately 80% of the nation's deciduous fruit exports.

Other major South African ports, including Durban and Richards Bay, continue to manage high volumes of ship movements. Durban's container and multi-purpose terminals are processing various vessels, including those at Pier 1, Pier 2, and Maydon Wharf. Richards Bay remains a key hub for coal terminal activities and general ship movements, with numerous vessels scheduled for berthing and anchorage throughout August 2026.
