South African Rand Stabilizes Near Month‑High as Oil Prices Slip
The South African rand traded sideways on Friday, hovering around R16.36 per U.S. dollar as global risk sentiment improved following renewed U.S.–Iran negotiations on Middle‑East peace. Brent crude slipped below US$80 a barrel, easing pressure on the rand, while gold remained above US$4,200 an ounce, supporting the currency of the major metals exporter.
The South African Reserve Bank kept its repo rate at 7.00% after a narrow 4‑2 vote, despite headline inflation reaching 5.0% in June, a two‑year high. Analysts note that lower oil import costs and firm metal prices are helping the rand recover from a low of R16.98 on 24 July, bringing it close to its strongest level in almost a month.
Overall, the currency’s steadiness reflects a balance between easing concerns over energy‑supply disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and domestic inflation pressures, with markets watching upcoming U.S. payroll data for further direction.
