South African Rand Strengthens as US Dollar Weakens After Fed Rate Hold

The South African rand firmed to around 16.5–16.66 per US dollar on Thursday, supported by a softer greenback after the U.S. Federal Reserve left its benchmark interest rate unchanged. The Fed decision, a 9‑3 vote to maintain rates between 3.50% and 3.75%, eased expectations of a rate hike and bolstered risk appetite for emerging‑market currencies.

Domestic data also helped sentiment: Statistics South Africa reported consumer inflation of 5.0% in June, up from 4.5% in May but still within the Reserve Bank’s target band. Better fiscal credibility, rating upgrades and real‑yield advantages kept investors interested in rand‑denominated assets. The rand’s rally reflected broader dollar weakness rather than a specific local catalyst, with South African equities and bonds also posting modest gains.
