South African Rand weakens amid global risk shifts and fuel price concerns

The South African Rand is facing downward pressure against major currencies, including the US dollar, Euro, and British pound. This decline is driven by a global risk-off sentiment fueled by elevated US Treasury yields and a strengthening dollar, which is draining capital from emerging-market assets.

Domestic factors are also weighing on the currency. Investors are anticipating an upcoming monthly fuel-price adjustment, with analysts forecasting significant increases. Petrol prices are expected to rise by approximately R3.29 per litre, while diesel may increase by roughly R3.19 per litre. These hikes, combined with higher oil prices, are expected to exert further inflationary pressure on the economy.

Economic indicators show signs of contraction. The S&P Global South Africa PMI fell to 49.0 in September from 50.5 in August, signaling a contraction in the private sector due to weak demand, supply bottlenecks, and rising costs.
