South African Reserve Bank faces potential interest rate hike expectations
Market sentiment in South Africa has shifted toward expectations of an interest rate hike by the South African Reserve Bank. Financial institutions Morgan Stanley and Bank of America have adopted hawkish outlooks, citing renewed pressure from oil prices. Morgan Stanley suggests that inflation may fail to meet the 3 per cent target, potentially necessitating a 25 basis point hike. Bank of America has predicted two rate hikes by the end of the year.
This shift follows a period of debate regarding the Reserve Bank’s monetary policy. While the repo rate was previously held at 7% amid 5% inflation, economists have argued over whether the central bank should prioritize inflation control or economic growth, especially as oil prices near $100 per barrel due to Middle East tensions. The Monetary Policy Committee is scheduled to begin deliberations this week.
