South African SMEs face R350 billion funding gap
South African small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face a significant funding gap estimated by the OECD at approximately R350 billion. Traditional lending processes often involve lengthy waiting periods and extensive paperwork, which can lead to missed procurement opportunities, stock shortages, and lost customers.
To address these delays, payments provider Ozow partnered with SME funder Lula in April 2026 to embed funding options directly into the Ozow Merchant Portal. This allows eligible businesses to view indicative offers before committing to a full application.
Simultaneously, a new generation of emerging investment managers is addressing the ‘missing middle’—businesses that are too large for micro-lenders but too small for major private equity funds. These managers utilize flexible capital, including mezzanine finance and private credit, to support growth. The South African private capital ecosystem continues to expand, with the South African Venture Capital Association (SAVCA) representing over 230 managers overseeing more than R237 billion.
