South African special forces charged in murder of detective Frans Mathipa

Eight members of the South African special forces and one military police officer have been charged with the August 2023 murder of Lt Col Frans Mathipa, a senior detective with the elite police unit known as "The Hawks."

Evidence from police and court documents suggests that a vehicle registered to a special forces front company trailed Mathipa before he was shot dead while driving. Tracking data placed the vehicle at the scene of the shooting. One individual in the vehicle, Maj Sunnybooi Wambi, was reportedly linked to an alleged abduction that Mathipa had been investigating.

The case has raised concerns regarding military overreach in South Africa. Despite the charges, a trial date has not been set, and there are concerns regarding the legal proceedings as three of the accused have refused to comply with a court order revoking their bail. Some of the accused remain active within the special forces, with one receiving a promotion.
