South African venture capital seeks institutional investment growth
The 2026 SAVCA Venture Capital Industry Survey indicates that unlocking institutional investment has become a top strategic priority for South African venture capital fund managers. Approximately 29.4% of managers identified attracting institutional capital, such as pension and retirement funds, as a key medium-term objective, tying it with the goal of attracting foreign direct investment (FDI).
While venture capital has historically been treated as a niche asset class in South Africa, recent data suggests growing confidence in its performance. Research conducted by the SA SME Fund, SAVCA, and Endeavor South Africa analyzed over a decade of local activity, finding that R2 billion invested into exited businesses yielded approximately R4.9 billion in realized returns. This return profile is considered comparable to more mature international venture capital markets.
Anusha Naidu, CEO of SAVCA, noted that private capital offers institutional investors tools for diversification and direct participation in economic growth, helping trustees balance risk and long-term sustainability.
