South African volunteers conduct regional conservation projects

Volunteers in South Africa have conducted significant environmental cleanup and conservation efforts in two separate locations.

In Great Brak River, members of the Great Brak River Conservancy cleared the Station Garden to prepare for the planting of medicinal plants. Organized by Michelle Heyes, the project involved removing overhanging branches and debris that blocked pathways. The Mossel Bay Municipality supported the initiative by providing three skips for the garden materials and palm fronds.

In the Agtertafelberg region, fifteen volunteers from the Mountain Club of South Africa (MCSA) worked to remove approximately 4,600 invasive pine trees from the slopes. The team targeted Pinus pinaster, which had spread following a fire several years ago. The removal process, which included cutting, ringing, and pulling trees, aims to protect indigenous fynbos vegetation and maintain water availability in mountain catchments.
