South African wine faces pricing challenges amid high quality scores

The South African wine industry is facing challenges regarding international pricing and consumer perception. While some experts argue that South African wines are priced too low globally, observations from the European market suggest that competition from established regions like Germany remains high. Consumers often prioritize familiarity and lower price points over the perceived value of South African labels.

In terms of quality recognition, the Cape Town-based estate De Grendel has achieved significant acclaim in the Tim Atkin MW South Africa Special Report 2026. The estate received nine scores of 90 points or higher, covering a variety of current and forthcoming vintages. The highest score was awarded to the Op Die Berg Chardonnay 2025, which received 94 points.
