South African woman accused of staging kidnapping for ransom

Ntombifuthi Mavis Rumo, 37, has appeared in the Kwa-Thema Magistrates’ Court facing charges of fraud, defeating the ends of justice, and staging a crime scene. Prosecutors allege that Rumo conspired with Bonginkosi Mndebele, 27, and another individual to fake her abduction on 7 October to extort R40,000 from her family due to financial difficulties.

The scheme involved ransom demands and a video showing Rumo appearing injured and pleading for help. The plan reportedly faltered when the family could not afford the payment. Rumo was eventually found near a cemetery on 20 October after her husband brought her to the police.

Authorities are currently seeking a second suspect in connection with the case. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) expressed concern over the resources wasted on investigating the false report. The matter has been postponed to 29 October for bail investigations and the appearance of the second accused.
