South African youth candidates contest local government elections

A growing number of candidates under the age of 30 are contesting local government positions in South Africa to address issues such as high living costs, inadequate service delivery, and youth unemployment. These candidates, representing various political parties and grassroots movements, aim to increase youth participation in community decision-making.

Data from the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) indicates that individuals between 18 and 39 years old comprise 32 percent of the candidates for the upcoming local government elections. Despite this, observers note that young people remain inadequately represented on many party lists.

Individual candidates are focusing on specific regional challenges. In Cape Town, candidates are advocating for affordable living conditions, while in eThekwini, candidates are highlighting the need for better housing in informal settlements and improved access to job opportunities to combat crime and poverty.
