South Africa's Barbara Creecy orders SANRAL contract probe and launches truck stop framework

South African Transport Minister Barbara Creecy has initiated two major actions regarding national transport infrastructure and logistics.

First, Creecy has ordered the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) to conduct an urgent review of multi-million rand infrastructure contracts awarded to Moriel Infrastructure Group. This directive follows a viral video of a high-profile businessman involved in a public altercation, which led to scrutiny of his ties to the firm. Moriel Infrastructure Group recently secured a R107.5 million SANRAL contract in 2024. While the businessman has been removed as a company director following the incident, the investigation will determine if the firm was lawfully appointed and if it is meeting its contractual obligations.

Additionally, Minister Creecy launched the National Truck Stop Framework to standardize and improve facilities for truck drivers across the country. The framework follows an assessment of 179 truck stops that revealed significant disparities in security, lighting, and sanitation. The initiative aims to address issues such as inadequate parking and poor ablution facilities, which the Minister noted impact road safety, driver fatigue, and freight efficiency.
