South Africa's Coega Green Ammonia Project Secures $1 B Deal with Danish Firm Topsoe

South Africa’s Coega Green Ammonia Project, developed by Hive Hydrogen (Hive Energy Ltd.) together with BuiltAfrica Group, has signed a roughly $1 billion agreement with Danish company Topsoe A/S. The deal covers Topsoe’s electrolyzer and ammonia synthesis equipment, including an 850 MW solid‑oxide electrolyzer system.

The plant, located at the port of Coega in the Eastern Cape, is designed to produce up to one million metric tonnes of green ammonia per year by 2030. Total project cost is estimated at about $5.8 billion, with an overall investment of around R83 billion ($3.8 billion) in renewable generation capacity (approximately 3,300 MW of wind and solar) to supply the electrolyzers. Front‑End Engineering Design is slated for Q3 2026, with a Final Investment Decision targeted for Q3 2027 and operations expected in the mid‑2030s.

The developers aim to export the green ammonia principally to Japan and South Korea, pricing it at about $650 per tonne. South African authorities view the project as a cornerstone of the country’s low‑carbon energy strategy, anticipating thousands of jobs and a new export hub for sustainable fuels.
