South Africa's Diamond Mines Face Business Rescue and Sale

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA) succeeded in a Northern Cape High Court challenge that halted the liquidation of Ekapa Minerals’ diamond mine in Kimberley and placed the operation under business rescue. NUMSA’s plan proposes a R25‑million deal with Hall of Diamonds and could preserve roughly half of the mine’s 1,030 jobs. A union representative said, “After the news about the judgment, the workers were very happy.”

At the same time, Petra Diamonds announced that its Finsch mine will be sold after business rescue practitioners determined there is no viable path to restart mining. Creditors approved a plan to liquidate assets, and the mine will continue with a skeleton crew. Petra’s CEO Vivek Gadodia attributed the outcome to an “unprecedentedly weak diamond market” and the impact of synthetic diamonds on prices. Both developments highlight severe financial strain in South Africa’s diamond sector and the potential loss of hundreds of jobs.
