South Africa's gambling boom fuels R1.5 trillion bets and soaring problem‑gambler rates

South Africans wagered roughly R1.5 trillion on gambling in the 2024/25 financial year, equivalent to about 20 % of the country’s GDP and nearly half of annual government spending. Online platforms dominate, accounting for 80 % of gambling activity, while the industry’s revenue grew by more than 25 % over the year, outpacing overall economic growth.

Problem gambling has surged, rising from 6 % of gamblers in 2017 to over 31 % today. The National Responsible Gambling Programme recorded over a million helpline calls in 2024/25, and referrals for treatment among 18‑ to 35‑year‑olds more than doubled. University students are especially affected, with many betting bursary or NSFAS funds and borrowing money to cover basic needs.

Google Trends shows gambling‑related terms ranking among the top ten searches in South Africa, with Betway and Hollywoodbets ranking just behind the weather. The article debunks common myths about patterns, “signals”, and guaranteed wins, emphasizing that online casino games such as Aviator use provably fair random number systems and cannot be predicted.
