South Africa's IDAC chief Andrea Johnson testifies to Madlanga Commission amid corruption scandal

Andrea Johnson, the head of South Africa’s Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC), has appeared before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, which is probing allegations that a criminal cartel has infiltrated state institutions. Johnson faces accusations of leaking a criminal complaint to senior Crime Intelligence officer Feroz Khan and is linked to the broader policing scandal investigated by the commission.

In her testimony, Johnson described the cases against Lieutenant‑General Dumisani Khumalo and his co‑accused as evidence of state capture, fraud and corruption, citing illegal appointments within the Crime Intelligence unit that bypassed vetting and security‑clearance procedures. The commission’s investigation was prompted by allegations from KwaZulu‑Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi concerning rogue elements in IDAC. Johnson was briefly hospitalized before testifying, delaying her appearance.

The Madlanga Commission continues to examine the alleged infiltration of the National Prosecuting Authority’s anti‑corruption directorate and the potential misuse of funds within Crime Intelligence, with Johnson’s role and CV under scrutiny.
