South Africa's IEC faces party dispute and tech partnerships

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) is navigating both political challenges and new technological safeguards ahead of the upcoming local government elections on November 4.

The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has accused the IEC of unfair treatment after the commission refused to amend its candidate list. The MK Party sought to rectify ward candidate placements, add omitted names, and remove deceased candidates. The IEC rejected these requests, citing a Constitutional Court judgment that limits the reopening of the nomination process. The MK Party has demanded a substantive written explanation, arguing the changes are not merely administrative but impact their organizational participation.

Simultaneously, the IEC has announced a partnership with major technology companies, including Google, Meta, Microsoft, TikTok, and Moxii Africa, to combat disinformation. This cooperation agreement aims to mitigate the spread of fake news and AI-generated content that could distort the electoral process. The initiative reflects a shift toward treating digital platforms as active stakeholders in safeguarding democratic integrity.
