South Africa's Venetia Mine to Shut Down Amid Diamond Industry Crisis

The Venetia diamond mine in Limpopo, northern South Africa, will cease operations, affecting roughly 4,500 employees and thousands of indirect jobs. The shutdown follows a sharp decline in global demand for natural diamonds, driven by competition from cheaper laboratory‑grown stones, a steep fall in Chinese consumption, U.S. tariffs on Indian diamond jewellery, and sanctions on Russian diamonds.

Industry veteran Garet Penny, who spent 22 years at De Beers, told SABC that "the industry has never been under greater pressure than today." South African Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe urged mining firms to increase promotion of natural diamonds, warning that the sector faces a "perfect storm" of challenges. Synthetic diamonds cost 50‑80% less than mined stones and have a lower environmental footprint, reshaping consumer expectations and weakening the traditional symbolism of diamonds in engagements and weddings.
