Venezuela reports earthquakes in Falcón and Yaracuy alongside widespread power outages
Venezuela experienced multiple seismic and electrical disruptions on September 8, 2026. Funvisis reported four earthquakes during the early morning hours, including a magnitude 4.4 tremor near Churuguara, Falcón, and a magnitude 3.4 tremor in Aroa, Yaracuy. These events follow a major seismic sequence from June 24, which resulted in an official death toll of 6,509 people.
Later that evening, a severe electrical fluctuation and subsequent power outages were reported across much of the country. The instability affected the Caracas metropolitan area and at least ten other states, including Zulia, Táchira, and Mérida. While the government has attributed recent electrical failures to sabotage by extremist groups, opposition leaders and experts point to systemic corruption and a lack of maintenance as the primary causes.
