South America seismic activity triggers regional concern

South America has experienced a series of significant seismic events across Venezuela, Colombia, and Peru within a two-month period. In Venezuela, devastating earthquakes on June 24, involving magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, resulted in an official death toll of 6,438 people and caused widespread destruction, particularly in La Guaira and Caracas. The World Bank estimated direct physical damages from these events at approximately $19.6 billion.

Following these events, Colombia was struck by a 7.4 magnitude earthquake on August 10, and Peru experienced a tremor on August 20, which the USGS calculated at a magnitude of 6.7. In Venezuela, Funvisis reported 103 seismic events between August 14 and August 20, with magnitudes ranging from 1.3 to 4.0.

In response to regional concerns, Argentine seismic authorities (INPRES and SEGEMAR) have clarified that the activity in northern South America does not indicate or predict future earthquakes in Argentina. Experts emphasize that while the region is seismically active due to the interaction of the Nazca and South American plates, earthquakes are localized tectonic processes and cannot be predicted with exact timing or location.
