South American climate initiatives focus on livestock and maritime decarbonization
In Argentina, The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has launched the Patagonia Technical Support Platform (PAT Pat) to promote sustainable and regenerative livestock systems in Northern Patagonia. Through the ESTEPA program, the initiative aims to integrate environmental, social, and economic dimensions to conserve steppe ecosystems and mitigate climate change. The platform serves as an inter-institutional space connecting public and private technicians, universities, and provincial agencies to share technical knowledge and common goals.
In Chile, researchers and maritime authorities have concluded a workshop in Puerto Montt focused on ocean applications for climate change mitigation. Participants, including representatives from CINCO Chile and the University of Los Lagos, agreed to develop a roadmap for maritime decarbonization next year. This roadmap intends to link scientific research with Chile’s specific productive and environmental realities. Discussions also included the scientific feasibility of increasing alkalinity in wastewater to address ocean acidification.
